Case Study

Enhancing Mathematics Learning through Teach Active Maths at HSV International Primary School, The Hague.

Objective:

Enhancing Mathematics Learning through Teach Active Maths at HSV International Primary School, The Hague.

Introduction
We are an International Primary School across four locations around the centre of The Hague. We have integrated the Active Maths resource into our curriculum to foster a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Active Maths combines physical activity with mathematical concepts, aiming to improve student engagement, understanding, and overall enjoyment of mathematics.

Implementation
Active Maths lessons are designed to be interactive and kinesthetic, allowing students to learn mathematical concepts through movement and physical activity. These lessons are structured to meet the UK curriculum learning objectives, ensuring that students achieve the required competencies while engaging in active learning. Our teachers really appreciate the comprehensive lesson plans, activity ideas, and assessment tools, making it easier for teachers to implement and plan effectively.

Impact on Students
The integration of Active Maths has led to several positive outcomes for our students:

  • Increased Engagement: Students demonstrate heightened interest and participation in mathematics lessons. The majority of our students are non-native English speakers so learning in this way means they often feel more confident to participate in lessons.
  • Enhanced Understanding: By associating mathematical concepts with physical movement, students have developed a deeper understanding of abstract ideas, making learning more tangible and accessible.
  • Improved Attitudes Towards Mathematics: Students who previously found mathematics challenging or uninteresting have shown improved attitudes, expressing greater confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.

Teacher Perspectives
Teachers have observed significant benefits from using Active Maths:

  • Effective Lesson Planning: The resource provides ready-to-use materials and structured lesson plans, reducing preparation time and allowing teachers to focus more on delivery and student interaction.
  • Support for Diverse Learners: Active Maths caters to various learning styles, offering opportunities for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners to engage with the content effectively.
  • Professional Development: Teachers have reported an increase in their own confidence and creativity in teaching mathematics, as Active Maths encourages innovative approaches to lesson delivery.
  • Using Active Maths has positively impacted both students and teachers at our school. By aligning physical activity with mathematical learning objectives, we have created a more engaging and effective learning environment.
